The Japanese term “Ichimatsu” refers to a “checkered pattern,” which features alternating small squares in various colours. This pattern is named after Sanogawa Ichimatsu, a kabuki theater actor known for his costumes featuring this distinctive design. The Ichimatsu pattern is associated with prosperity and often symbolizes business growth and success.

These handmade Ichimatsu Silver chopsticks are a true work of art, skilfully crafted by the renowned Tsuchinao lacquerware artisans in Sabae, Fukui Prefecture, Japan. The creation of these exquisite chopsticks begins with carefully shaping them from Malas wood, a robust hardwood native to Southeast Asia and the Pacific. Scientifically known as Homalium Foetidum, Malas wood is prized for its exceptional strength, durability, and natural resistance to decay, making it an ideal material for fine craftsmanship. Once shaped, the chopsticks undergo a meticulous three-step Urushi (Japanese lacquer) coating process, starting with a rough coat, followed by a middle coat, and concluding with a final layer. Each coating is precisely dried to ensure a flawless finish. After passing a thorough quality inspection, the chopsticks are adorned with intricate painted or printed designs, transforming them into a stunning fusion of artistry and functionality.

Over time, Urushi hardens, ensuring exceptional durability and making the design resistant to wear. Additionally, Urushi is both water-resistant and naturally antibacterial, enhancing the functionality of these chopsticks. However, to preserve their quality, avoid cleaning them in a dishwasher.
